Aux Arc Campground sits on the shores of Ozark Lake in the
picturesque Arkansas River Valley.
"Aux Arc" is a name that originated with French
explorers when they mapped the territory. The term means "the big
bend," describing the bend in the Arkansas River. Over time, the name was
simplified to "Ozark," thus the name for Ozark Lake. “Aux” is apparently
pronounced “ox,” but I’m not sure about that.
Aux Arc Campground offers spacious, shady campsites with
electric and water hookups. Here are a couple of pictures of the site we had
(F9). After looking at all the sites, we think this is just about the best. We
reserved it more than a month in advance.
All during the day you can hear trains rumbling by. When it
is light out, the train will blow its whistle. During the night, however, it
will not, so all you hear is the rumbling of the train which I actually enjoyed.
Across from our site there is some type of barge or boat.
Except for one bass boat, though, we never saw another boat on the water. To me
it looks like a dredger. It made for an interesting view.
One section of RV spots had a single drive way that accommodated
2 sites in a Y configuration. I had never seen that before and watched one poor
guy trying to back into a spot over and over because the trailer on the other
side of the Y was close to the edge of the driveway.
The park supposedly had hot showers, but I never got any hot
water. In fact, one shower stall on the men’s side had a push faucet that gave
you about 15 seconds of water. Not a problem – our trailer shower heats up pretty fast
and gets very hot, but if you are looking for hot showers, be aware.
Shockingly, I was able to get T-Mobile cell reception, a
rarity in that part of Arkansas!
All in all, if you can get into an F spot, this is a great
park. I’m not sure about the Y configuration area. Unless you love the people
next to you, it might be a hassle.
